Jimmy Ausbrooks, a distinguished native of Kentucky, has been honored with the title of Kentucky Colonel by Governor Beshear. His academic foundation was established at Western Kentucky University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government, followed by a Master of Education in Counseling and Human Development from Lindsey Wilson College.
Jimmy was raised in rural Simpson County, Kentucky, primarily by his grandparents, Thomas “Jake” and Mamie Wimpee. He attended Franklin-Simpson schools, where he demonstrated leadership as an officer in the FFA and was a member of organizations such as FBLA and SADD. For his senior year of high school, he attended Oneida Baptist Institute, where he participated on the Debate Team and graduated in the top 25% of his class, having completed a faith-based education.
He is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor -Supervisor (LPCC-S) in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP). He is currently employed at an essential and highly respected hospital in the Lexington, KY community. Furthermore, he has successfully operated his own private practice, under the umbrella of his friend and mentor’s agency, Crimson Dove Counseling, where he established strong community relationships providing necessary behavioral and mental health services to families and individuals in both rural and urban areas of Kentucky.
Jimmy maintains a profound commitment to Kentucky, his profession, and the advocacy of human rights. In 2022, he secured the Democratic Party's nomination for Kentucky's 1st Congressional District, launching a notable campaign against the incumbent, Representative James Coomer. This effort, undertaken by a previously unknown candidate, significantly impacted many lives by focusing on the possibility of change and encouraging broader participation in public office. Critically, Mr. Ausbrooks served as a beacon of hope and a role model for the LGBTQIA+ community, becoming the first openly gay candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives to appear on a general election ballot in Kentucky's history, and only the second candidate for the U.S. Congress. He also holds the distinction of being the first mental health professional to be on the ballot in any Kentucky election.
Jimmy is recognized as a person of faith, with character, and high moral and ethical standards, who fosters hope and alliance both personally and professionally. He also has mentored individuals to advance their knowledge, leadership, and professionalism within behavioral and mental health.
He has been a dedicated member of the Kentucky Counseling Association (KCA) since 2017, serving for over five years on the KCA board. His leadership roles within the association include division president, chapter vice-president, and service on various committees.
The team collaborating with Jimmy comprises a dedicated group of individuals and professionals committed to effecting and promoting change alongside him. This team engages closely with Jimmy to enhance visibility, cultivate understanding, disseminate educational information, assist in needs identification, and deliver customized solutions that surpass the campaign's and candidate's expectations.
The objective of the Jimmy Ausbrooks for US Congress campaign is to provide an opportunity for systemic change, to ensure the continued prosperity of Kentucky and the nation, and to address the pressing needs of our families, constituents, state, and country.
